Before attending the “Poo Sae-Yaa Sae Offering Ceremony” for the first time, I knew almost nothing about this tradition. After learning more at the event, I discovered that it is an ancient Lanna ritual that has been practiced in Chiang Mai for hundreds of years. The ceremony is held to honor Poo Sae and Yaa Sae, two ancestral spirits believed to protect the forest, local villagers, and the surrounding community. In the past, people strongly believed that these spirits had great power over nature and human life, so they prepared offerings and performed rituals to show respect and ask for protection and good fortune.
Experiencing the ceremony in person was very different from simply reading about it. As I walked into the area, I could hear traditional drums and prayers echoing through the forest, creating a mysterious but fascinating atmosphere. Seeing local people gather together with deep respect made me realize how meaningful this tradition still is today. The moment that impressed me the most was when the spirit medium performed the ritual because everyone became completely silent and focused. Even though it was my first time, I could feel the strong connection between the people, their beliefs, and nature. The ceremony gave me a deeper understanding of Lanna culture and made me appreciate how traditions from the past are still carefully preserved in modern society.
