Bangkok, the capital city and the main gateway to Thailand, is typically the first stop for international travelers before continuing northward to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai — two of the country’s most beloved destinations and cultural landmarks.
Although the journey between Bangkok and Northern Thailand can easily be made by plane, traveling by road offers the opportunity to divide the trip into several days while exploring many fascinating places en route. Along the way, travelers can experience Thailand’s history, culture, nature, and local communities in a truly memorable way.
Visitors may choose to begin their northern journey immediately upon arrival in Bangkok or spend a day or two exploring the capital city beforehand. Ultimately, most international departures will still take place from Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, making the city both the beginning and ending point of many Thailand itineraries.
A road trip from Bangkok to Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai can be designed for as little as 3 days or extended to 15 days or more, depending on the traveler’s interests and schedule.
Along the route, there are numerous attractions worth visiting, including:
- The famous Maeklong Railway Market (Train Market) in Samut Songkhram
- Damnoen Saduak Floating Market in Ratchaburi

Travelers may then continue to Ayutthaya, the ancient capital of Siam located just over an hour from Bangkok. The journey then proceeds to Sukhothai Historical Park, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, where visitors can explore the ancient city by bicycle or electric tram while enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of Thailand’s first kingdom.
From Sukhothai, the route continues to Lampang, famous for its horse carriages and beautiful temples, before arriving in Chiang Rai to visit iconic attractions such as the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), Doi Tung, and the Golden Triangle. Finally, the journey concludes in Chiang Mai, the cultural heart of Northern Thailand and one of the country’s most charming destinations.
The number of places visited along the route ultimately depends on the traveler’s available time. We recommend allowing at least three days or more in order to fully appreciate the beauty and character of each destination.
