The Tradition of Walking Up Doi Suthep”Doi Suthep Pilgrimage

Before this year, I had never even heard about the tradition of walking up Doi Suthep. Later, I learned that it is an old Lanna Buddhist tradition where people walk together to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep to make merit and show their faith, especially during Visakha Bucha Day. It has been practiced for many generations and is one of the most important traditions in Chiang Mai.

What impressed me the most was the atmosphere along the road. There were massive crowds of people walking together, but instead of being noisy or chaotic, the feeling was surprisingly warm and friendly. Many people set up small stations to give free water, drinks, and food to everyone walking by. Even though I only walked about one-third of the way because it would have taken too long to finish and I had work the next day, I still enjoyed the experience a lot. The energy of the people and the sense of community made me understand why this tradition is so meaningful to locals. I could not reach the temple this time, but next year I definitely want to come back and complete the journey.
